Tuesday kicked off CAN I KICK IT?’s first-ever outdoor screening, in partnership with the DowntownDC BID. For the uninitiated, CAN I KICK IT? offers a twist to the traditional movie viewing experience, spotlighting martial arts classics and remixing each soundtrack with an original hip hop score. Gerald Watson and DJ 2-Tone Jones, co-founders of local creative group Shaolin Jazz, conceived the idea as a way to highlight the parallels between hip hop and martial arts culture.
They’ve been putting on their monthly CAN I KICK IT? screenings at Adams Morgan’s Songbyrd, but decided to temporary take their series to Freedom Plaza for the month of June. Every Tuesday this month, they’ll be showing movies like The Matrix and Big Trouble in Little China on the big screen, offerings free popcorn and seat cushions to top off the entire experience. Check it out while you can–the next screening is on Tuesday, June 13.
