Erykah Badu, Wu-Tang Clan, Thievery Corporation and More Will Headline D.C.’s SXSW Showcase
Erykah Badu, Wu-Tang Clan, Thievery Corporation, Rare Essence and Backyard Band are among nearly two dozen acts representing D.C. at South by Southwest in March.
Billboard first reported the news. Some of our favorite D.C. acts like Den-Mate (who’s also set to headline DCMD’s Sounds of the City Festival this Saturday at Black Cat), NUEX and BOOMscat are also on the lineup and were chosen out of hundreds of applicants to represent the city through a competition on Brightest Young Things. Other acts like Magic Giant, Ari Lennox (who recently signed to J Cole’s label, Dreamville), Reesa Renee, Ras Nebyu and DJ Mathias are also slated to perform. The musical performances are a part of a larger initiative to promote D.C. at SXSW helmed by the Washington DC Economic Partnership, Mayor Muriel Bowser’s office and Events DC. Showcases will take place at pop-up space WeDC House from March 11-13 and on March 14 at Austin City Limits Live’s Moody Theatre.
Besides musical performances, the WeDC House will host restaurant tastings, panels and a tech showcase featuring D.C. startups. The space will also livestream other official SXSW showcases including a discussion with the Newseum.
