Playlist: DCMD Sounds of the City Festival’s D.C. Record Label Expo

By Stephanie Williams | Features

Besides the talented musicians and fantastic venues that shape the city’s music scene, D.C.’s independent labels also serve a vital purpose here. Although it’s easier–now more than ever–to release music independently, record labels still remain a valuable resource for musicians. The benefits go beyond just a helpful co-sign, but also include handling logistics like promoting, distributing and releasing records. Having a trustworthy label’s backing allows the artist to focus on making music and alleviate the stress of having to handle the business side of things all by themselves.

For DCMD’s Sounds of the City Festival, we’re proud to present over a dozen of D.C.’s best record labels for the first-ever D.C. Record Label Expo on Saturday, March 4. From the deep house grooves of Proper Vibes and Better Listen Records to the experimental offerings of Carpark Records and Cuneiform Records, just about every type of sound and genre is represented within this awesome group. This is a chance to discover, meet and buy direct from these labels, and also enjoy live music from some of our favorite D.C. acts!

Kick back and listen to our official playlist featuring (most) of the labels participating in the event! Also RSVP to the expo here and stay up-to-date on the latest. For more info on DCMD’s Sounds of the City Festival, click here.
