Listening Session: Top 5 Shows This Week

Tuesday, Dec. 6–Cam’ron with Jay IDK, Beau Young Prince, Innanet James, Ciscero, Matt McGhee, Siimba Lives Long, and special guests, hosted by DJ Kidd Marvel @ U Street Music Hall. Show 8 p.m./Tickets $21+ DOS only.

If you’re curious as to whom the major players are in D.C.’s hip-hop scene right now, look no further than this show. Opening for Cam’ron on Tuesday night at U Street Music Hall are several of the area’s most-promising emcees like Innanet James, Jay IDK, Ciscero (who’s also a frequent collaborator of GoldLink’s) along with surprise guests. Technically the show sold out a few weeks ago online, but there are a very, very limited amount of door tickets available. If you plan on going, make sure to get there early.

Wednesday, Dec. 7–Paperhaus and Skyline Hotel @ Gypsy Sally’s. Show 8:30 p.m./Tickets $10 advance or $12 DOS

At the heart of D.C.’s rock scene is Paperhaus, who is currently working on new material for their forthcoming record. Wednesday’s show at Gypsy Sally’s will serve as a sneak peek to what they’ve got in the works, with Skyline Hotel opening the show.

Thursday, Dec. 8–April+VISTA @ the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Show 5:30 p.m./FREE

Rising D.C. duo April+VISTA craft R&B music that sounds like it was made in another dimension–at once familiar and grounded, yet otherworldly and completely foreign to the ears. Boasting a timeless production and soulful, soaring vocals, April+VISTA is a refreshing new addition to the D.C. music scene, and we’re excited to have them at our last Luce Unplugged show of the year. It’s a free, all-ages event that starts at 5:30 p.m. with an art talk, followed by the band’s performance at 6 p.m.

Friday, Dec. 9–Flasher, Swim Team, Post Pink, DJ Anna Nasty @ Black Cat. Doors 9 p.m./Tickets $10

Another D.C. band that we’ve fallen in love with this year is post-punk trio Flasher, who’ll celebrate the reissue of their debut EP via Sister Polygon Records at Black Cat. Portland rockers Swim Team and Baltimore’s Post Pink will support the band on Friday, with tunes from Anna Nasty to keep the good vibes going.

Saturday, Dec. 10–Aztec Sun @ Songbyrd. Show 10 p.m./Tickets $10

Aztec Sun’s EP release show on Saturday at Songbyrd won’t be so much a performance as it will be a night-long dance party. Their vibrant, funky and soulful tunes with get you, and keep you, on the dancefloor until the early morning hours. Ticket purchases also come with a copy of their EP.
