DCMD’s Favorite D.C. Submissions To NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest

NN

After an overwhelming response for its first year, NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest returned in January to find another lucky winner to perform at their coveted Tiny Desk concert series. For us at DCMD, it’s become one of our favorite times of the year for a couple reasons–we get to see some of our favorite D.C. bands come up with some really cool videos and also get to discover some new local acts. Last month we saw a bunch of great D.C. submissions come through, proving that there’s no shortage of talent coming from this area (as D.C. musician Jonny Grave pointed out in a response video about the contest).

Some of the standouts were folk trio Near Northeast’s intimate performance in the blizzard we had a few weeks ago and psychedelic punk-hop band Picnibus, who put together a memorable video for their song “Bad Accent” that became an early favorite. We also saw some pretty solid performances from bands like new hip-hop/rock group Gump, Redline Graffiti and Boon, who was a featured favorite in last year’s competition.
