Listening Session: Top 5 Shows This Week
The top five local shows this week, plus a short-hand list of other cool events
Cure your cabin fever with this show that Random Nerds and DCDIT are hosting this week. The diverse lineup includes local supergroup Cool People (featuring members of Dudes, Teen Liver and Coup Sauvage), the soulful rock sounds of New York’s Due Diligence and Georgia acoustic outfit 100 Watt Horse with D.C.’s Poppy Patica opening the show. You’ve been inside long enough–it’s time to treat yourself by going to Songbyrd this Wednesday.
Thursday, January 28–Coup Sauvage & the Snips and Foul Swoops @ Capital Fringe. Show 9 p.m./FREE
At the surface, this lineup presents two polar-opposite bands that seem to have little in common besides playing on the same bill. But for anyone who’s seen these two D.C. acts play, they can both pull off a dynamic performance, albeit in their own unique style. Coup Sauvage & the Snips’s pop sensibilities paired with Foul Swoops’ gritty rock offerings will either have you dancing or moshing–probably even both.
Big Hush only gets better with every release–after dropping their EP Wholes in 2014, the D.C. quartet unveiled their best record yet last year, Who’s Smoking Your Spirit, which includes the excellent song “Cough” that premiered on Fader. The band headlines Songbyrd this Friday with Florida rockers Soda and D.C.’s Kid Claws.
Friday, January 29–The Escape Artist, Drop Electric, Boon, Caustic Casanova @ Rock and Roll Hotel. Show 8:30 p.m./Tickets $12
D.C. dream rock outfit The Escape Artist will celebrate their new album Constellations on Friday night with some of our longtime favorites in the scene like Drop Electric and Boon. Local rock trio Caustic Casanova also joins this stacked D.C. bill that we’ll be there to see this weekend.
Saturday, January 30–Eau Claire, The Golden Pony, Citizen Select @ U Street Music Hall. Show 10 p.m./Tickets $10
After opening for acts like Bakermat and Flight Facilities at 9:30 Club, rising D.C. producer/DJ Eau Claire headlines her own show at U Street Music Hall with another local act we’re digging, nu-disco duo Citizen Select. Put your dancin’ shoes on and make your way to U Hall on Saturday night.
