The top five local shows this week, plus a short-hand list of other cool events

Thursday, January 14–Heavy Breathing, The Effects, Puff Pieces @ Black Cat. Doors 7:30 p.m./Tickets $10

Heavy Breathing, who we’ve lauded time and time again on DCMD for their amazing live show, will bring their psychedelic electronic rock offerings to the Black Cat’s backstage on Thursday night. They’ll lead an all-D.C. lineup that includes rock supergroup The Effects and math rock band Puff Pieces for a nice, diverse night of local music.

Thursday, January 14–Stronger Sex @ Smithsonian American Art Museum. Show 6 p.m./FREE

We’re co-hosting our first Luce Unplugged show of 2016 this Thursday with experimental noise-pop stalwarts Stronger Sex. The group first emerged with a riveting self-titled album in Jan. 2015 that included favorites like the imposing track “Temptation” and the otherworldly-industrial sounds of “D.” With their ingenious sound is a live performance that’s just as unique–with the Smithsonian American Art Museum as their backdrop, it’ll be a show not-to-miss. The FREE concert begins with an art talk at 5:30 p.m., featuring a piece of artwork chosen by Stronger Sex, followed by their performance at 6 p.m.

Friday, January 15–The Max Levine Ensemble, Two Inch Astronaut, Jank, Lackluster, and Isn’t It Always? @ Kay Spiritual Life Center Chapel at American University. Show 8 p.m./Tickets $7 without student ID or $5 with student ID

A match made in D.C. music heaven: Veteran pop-punk band The Max Levine Ensemble sharing a bill with Two Inch Astronaut is guaranteed to be on the top five list. Both D.C. music heavyweights will be joined by Philly’s Jank, New Jersey’s Isn’t it Always? and D.C. rock band Lackluster.

Saturday, January 16–Bless, Turnip King, Foul Swoops, Jimi Lucid @ Bathtub Republic. Show 7 p.m./$5 suggested donation

Bathtub Republic has a solid lineup booked for Saturday night, featuring a few of our favorite D.C. rock bands Bless and Foul Swoops, plus New York’s Turnip King. It’s the perfect show to start-off your three-day weekend.

Sunday, January 17–Rare Essence, Junkyard Band, EU @ The Howard Theatre. Show 9 p.m./Tickets $22+

If you want a crash course into the D.C. go-go scene, look no further than this stacked bill at The Howard Theatre on Sunday. Veterans Rare Essence, who were the first go-go band to perform at SXSW last year, go-go kings Junkyard Band and EU will bring the Howard house down.
