The top five local shows this week, plus a short-hand list of other cool events.
UPDATE: Grimes’ show on Nov. 13 at 9:30 Club is canceled tonight
Thursday, November 12–Yonatan Gat, Paperhaus, Go Cozy @ Comet Ping Pong. Show 9 p.m./Tickets $12
Booking impresario Sasha Lord presents a solid lineup of music at Comet Ping Pong on Thursday. Headlining the show is New York guitar virtuoso Yonatan Gat (ex-member of garage rock outfit Monotonix), D.C. veteran rockers Paperhaus and Babe City Records’ Go Cozy. If you’re looking for something to do this Thursday night, this show is your best bet.
Friday, November 13–The Sea Life, Triathalon, Laughing Man @ Songbyrd. Show 9 p.m./Tickets $10 advance or $12 DOS
After taking a short break from playing shows, The Sea Life will debut its new lineup and play some brand new songs on Friday at Songbyrd, the Adams Morgan venue that has really taken off since its opening. Besides hearing some new stuff from The Sea Life, Savannah indie-rock outfit Triathalon will celebrate their new album (“Nothing Bothers Me” and “Slip’n” are a couple great gems that were recently released via Stereogum) with D.C.’s own Laughing Man opening.
Saturday, November 14–Clones of Clones, Color Palette, Furniteur, Cruzie Beaux @ Rock and Roll Hotel. Show 8 p.m./Tickets $12
Music website Newdust presents four D.C. bands who’ve all released some solid tunes within the last year, the most recent one being Clones of Clones and their new album, Monster Heart. The local rock quartet will celebrate the record’s release on Saturday with electronic-rock group Color Palette, synth-pop outfit Furniteur and Cruzie Beaux co-headlining the show.
Sunday, November 15–Diane Coffee, The Duskwhales, Dead Professional @ DC9. Show 8 p.m./Tickets $10 advance or $12 DOS
Stepping out of Foxygen’s shadow, drummer Shaun Fleming shines under his solo moniker, Diane Coffee, a name that pays homage to Nathan Pelkey’s song “Mr. Coffee” and the iconic Diana Ross. Sunday’s show at DC9 will have Fleming and Northern Virginia rockers The Duskwhales, an awesome band that we recently discovered in September, along with D.C. singer-songwriter Dead Professional.
Sunday, November 15–Seán Barna, yOya, Louis Weeks, Rom @ Songbyrd. Show 8:30 p.m./Tickets $10
Songbyrd has another great (and mostly-local lineup) in store on Sunday night. Singer-songwriter Seán Barna will share the stage with the masterful artist Louis Weeks, D.C. rockers Rom and L.A. folk band yOya.
