Listening Session: Top 5 Shows This Week

By Stephanie Williams | Top 5 Shows This Week

The top five local shows this week, plus a short-hand list of other cool events.

Thursday, October 29–Teen Mom, BRNDA, Go Cozy @ Songbyrd. Show 9 p.m./Tickets $10

It was bittersweet news when Teen Mom’s new album, Groovy, dropped. On one hand, it was the best record Teen Mom has released so far, but on the other hand, it would turn out to be their last release. This Thursday’s show at Songbyrd will be their last performance, so don’t miss it.

Thursday, October 29–Justin Trawick and the Common Good, Brooke Annibale,
Dear Creek @ 16th Street House. Show 7:30 p.m./Tickets $15

Besides running his weekly podcast and starting The 9 singer-songwriter series, Justin Trawick somehow still finds time to perform and tour regularly. The veteran artist along with his band, The Common Good, always puts on a fun show that usually has a few cool twists and surprises built in. Catch them Thursday at the 16th Street House.

Friday, October 30–Humble Fire, the Effects, The Sherrod Brothers @ Songbyrd. Show 8:30 p.m./Tickets $10

After Teen Mom’s last show on Thursday, you’ll want to head back to Songbyrd again on Friday for this awesome lineup. After spending this summer in the studio, we’re excited to see D.C. rock outfit Humble Fire headline this show, joined by the audacious rock trio The Effects and The Sherrod Brothers (featuring the acclaimed local producer Tommy Sherrod and his brother, Owen Sherrod).

Saturday, October 31–Halloween Circus @ Black Cat. Doors 9 p.m./Tickets $10 advance or $12 DOS

Every year, D.C. singer-songwriter Jonny Grave throws a massive Halloween show at Black Cat’s Mainstage that tops just about every party out there. This year’s event is no exception, with performances from Grave and his band The Tombstones, D.C. folk artist Sara Curtin and the genre-bending band Footwerk. Plus, you’ll see burlesque performances from Gigi Holliday and Cherie Sweetbottom along with our funny friends Church Night hosting the show.

Saturday, October 31–The Lucky So & Sos, Nag Champa, Crystal Youth @ Velvet Lounge. Show 8:30 p.m./Tickets $8 DOS only

Three bands takeover Velvet Lounge on Halloween night, all bringing their unique sounds and styles that will make for a great show. Expect to hear hip-hop, R&B, jazz, electronic and even more genres all in one place.
