Listening Session: Top 5 Shows This Week
Wednesday, April 29– Baby Bry Bry & the Apologists, Vundabar, UVF Rays @ University of Maryland. Show 7pm/$5 donation
Baby Bry Bry & the Apologists are teaming up with one of our favorite Boston bands, Vundabar, for a great night of music this Wednesday. The trek up to College Park will be worth it, and it’s only five bucks to see these awesome bands perform.
Thursday, April 30-Saturday, May 2 Beauty Pill @ Artisphere. Show 8pm/SOLD OUT
One of the best local releases of the year so far comes from Beauty Pill, who unveiled their first album in a decade last week. If you haven’t listened to it yet, we’ve reviewed the release if you want to know more about this great record. Meanwhile, if you were able to get your tickets in time, Beauty Pill will perform this Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Artisphere, the same venue where they recorded their latest album. It’ll be a show unlike most that you’ve probably been to, as the audience will be positioned in the center of the room, with the band surrounding them with their beautiful music.
Friday, May 1-Ex Hex, the Shirks, and the Ar-Kaics @ Black Cat. Doors 9pm/SOLD OUT
After an extensive European tour, the ladies of Ex Hex are officially back in the States. This Friday marks the fierce trio’s homecoming show, which (unsurprisingly) sold out weeks ago. If you don’t snag a last-minute ticket in time, stay tuned for our coverage next week!
Friday, May 1-Andy Zipf and Ryan Walker @ IOTA Club. Show 9pm/Tickets $10 DOS only
Two notable D.C. singer-songwriters, Andy Zipf (The Cowards Choir) and Ryan Walker (The Beanstalk Library), are joining forces for a big show at IOTA Friday night. Besides doing separate solo performances and collaborations with each other, the duo will also welcome some surprise guests to the stage. Unlike the other two shows on the list that are already sold out, you can get tickets at the door for this one.
Saturday, May 2-Funk Parade @ U Street. Show 12pm/FREE
Funk Parade is one of the best music events in D.C., and this Saturday’s celebration will be even bigger compared to its debut last year, which brought in an estimated 30,000 people to U Street. The party will be separated into three separate events (daytime fair, parade and night festival) and over 50 musicians and performers are participating this year. Of note, DCMD will host its own stage at The Lot on Florida Avenue, with a fantastic, jam-packed lineup that includes veteran go-go act Junkyard Band, Empresarios, Tosin, Marlee in the Mixx, New Retro and the one and only DJ Ayescold. Grammy nominated artist Kokayi will host our stage, and Joy of Motion dance company will perform in-between sets!
