Our Guide to the Best of D.C. at SXSW
While we’re staying behind to rock out our amazing one year anniversary/Paperhaus’ EP release show at Rock and Roll Hotel this Friday, that doesn’t mean we can’t wishfully think of all the showcases we’d LOVE to go to. If you’re in Austin (or on your way there) here are some of our best bets for the week.
Don’t forget that we have a few D.C. reps for this year’s SXSW go-around, which all are scheduled to play their official showcases on Saturday, March 16th:
Dream pop duo GEMS
Place: Hickory Street (800 Congress Ave)
Surfer-rock quartet Shark Week
Place: Headhunters Patio (720 Red River St)
Rock outfit Kid Congo and The Pink Monkey Birds
Place: Maggie Mae’s Gibson Room (512 Trinity St)
As for the unofficial showcases, the top three on our list:
Wednesday, March 13th
The Spider House (2908 Fruth st. Austin, TX)
Over twenty bands will play at the second annual Oy Vey showcase this year, with a special performance from Thievery Corporation’s Congo Sanchez that is a not-to-miss set. On top of all the bands that will be performing, there will also be a live art demonstration happening during the show.
Friday, March 15th
DC vs. Austin
The Side Bar (602 E. 7th St. (@ Red River)
This is one of the most interesting showcases happening this week. Bringing together six solid (but stylistically very different) D.C. and Austin bands together across two stages, this is a great way to see what the scene has to offer at the moment. Artists lined-up are: Kid Congo, Shark Week, America Hearts, Bella Russia, Dance for the Dying, and Lowercase Letters. D.C.’s own booking impresario Sasha Lord had a hand in coordinating this awesome line-up of bands.
Friday, March 15th
The Wild Honey Pie and Paper Garden Records Present The Beehive
Uncorked (900 E 7th St)
If you’re confused about where to go on Friday-this certainly won’t help matters, either. Catch D.C. avant-garde folk group Pree with a very nice 13 band bill line-up that’s worth seeing if you have the time. While not from D.C., two other great bands, Widowspeak and Conveyor, will also be performing.
And finally, the D.C. blogs that are doing unofficial SXSW showcases:
Sweet Tea Pumpkin Pie is partnering with The Deli to sponsor Guitars Not Guns’ West 6th Street Block Party “Delicious Showcases“, scheduled for March 13th-17th. Some highlights include “The Deli Hangover Hideout” on the 14th at J. Black’s (W. 6TH ST.) with Shark Week among a slew of other bands from across the country.
All Things Go and Indie Shuffle team up for an eight-band showcase line-up on Saturday, March 16th at Club De Ville (900 Red River). Acts scheduled include some of All Things Go’s past event headliners Ghost Beach, HAERTS and Youngblood Hawke. Not to mention, those who arrive early will be rewarded with free food and beer.
